Tile is one of the things we do best, and our tile setters are part of our own team. A lot of what we set is porcelain, much of it large-format, and we're just as comfortable with subway, mosaic, terracotta and stone.

What's under the tile
The tile is the finish. The membrane keeps the water out.
Tile is tough and easy to clean. Grout fills the joints between tiles, but grout is maintenance, not waterproofing. In a shower, the waterproofing is a continuous membrane under the tile, and it goes on before a single tile does.
Most failed showers we open failed at the substrate and membrane, not at the tile. So most of the labor happens before you ever see tile: tear out to a sound substrate, repair what we find, then a Schluter Kerdi membrane with the seams, corners and openings reinforced, over a pan sloped to the drain. Every shower pan we build gets a 24-hour flood test before any tile goes on.
Tile size and grout
Smaller tile, more pieces, more grout line
Cut a tile's length in half and you double the pieces to set, cut and grout on the same wall. On an 88 sq ft tub surround, 3x12 subway takes about 350 tiles. 3x6 takes about 700, with about 20% more grout line. That's not a reason to skip a look you love. It's more work, and we'll show you where it adds up.

Every grout line is decided before the first tile goes up
We plan where the lines land so the cuts come out even at corners, edges and the niche, and the pattern reads straight across the whole wall.
Your tile is part of the scope
Tile size, shape, pattern, orientation, grout joint width, edge treatment and niche layout are all written into your quote. Change any of them after you sign, and we do a written scope, price and schedule review first.

Grout is the part that needs you
Wipe down with a mild cleaner. Cement grout is porous, so reseal it on the schedule for your grout. Epoxy grout usually doesn't need sealing.

Our mission is to make renovation feel easy, and with tile that starts with the parts you'll never see. Every job runs with at least two people on site, so there's always a second set of eyes on the layout, the membrane and every line of tile. That's the duet in our name. We'd rather be Seattle's best contractor than its biggest, so we don't skip steps, and we tell you plainly what we find behind the old tile.
Common tile questions
Does smaller tile cost more to install?
It's more pieces to set and more grout line. Going from 3x12 to 3x6 doubles the tiles on the same wall and adds about 20% more grout line. That's more labor, and your quote will show it.
Is grout waterproof?
No. Grout fills the joints and needs upkeep. The membrane under the tile is the waterproofing.
How do you keep a tiled shower from leaking?
A Schluter Kerdi membrane goes on before any tile, with seams, corners and openings reinforced, over a pan sloped to the drain. Then we flood-test the pan for 24 hours before tiling.
What if I change my tile after I sign?
We do a written scope, price and schedule review first, and nothing changes until you approve a written change order. An allowance covers the material, not automatically the labor.
Can I buy my own tile?
Yes, plenty of clients do. Our warranty covers our workmanship, not the tile itself.
Can microcement go over my old tile?
Yes, if the tile and the waterproofing behind it are sound: we prime it and apply the microcement right over it. If the shower is already leaking or the surface is compromised, we don't coat over it. We demo to the substrate, rebuild the waterproofing, then apply the microcement. Microcement vs tile walks through the choice.
